Hatha

Hatha means force when translated from Sanskrit. What this describes is that all yoga considered anything physical is considered Hatha yoga by putting force on the body and even using the breath. Here, at CRY, it will typically involve a sequence of static yoga poses and breathing techniques, practiced more slowly than a flow.

We always ask you to please, come ready to listen and learn in any class sequence your teacher has prepared for you! Let your expectations go and just come to practice because remember, Hatha yoga is considered anything physical you might do with the body and mind.

Ghosh Yoga Therapeutics & Bayam Exercise

The GHOSH YOGA therapeutic manual describes "Yoga Therapeutic Exercises to build functional strength and range of motion in the major joints and muscles. Therapeutic exercises are done in movement, in contrast to traditional yoga postures which are held in stillness. These exercises move the body through its range of motion with each repetition. Additionally, Bayam exercises can add an element of fitness, cardio, and strength to the practice.

Therapeutic exercises are intended to bring health and ease to the body and mind. They have the ability to strengthen weak areas and relax tight ones when employed properly and help alleviate common troubles."

5 at 5 - Hatha

This class cultivates the spirit of Kolkata yoga teaching in India and the practices according to the instructions of Dr. Gouri Shankar Mukerji. Postures are practiced in several sets with a rest in between. Join us in this weekly class and practice 5 postures, 5 sets, and watch the mind and body during the process.

According to Dr. Mukerji and explained by Ida Jo & Scott Lamps of Ghosh Yoga on Patreon:

"Practicing this way has profound implications for the body and mind. In the body, it requires stamina and moderation. It is difficult to hold the postures for a whole minute. The muscles get tired and balance gets challenging. We are forced to moderate our effort and depth so we can hold the postures the whole time. This is a different approach from pushing hard for just a few seconds.

In the mind, it demands concentration, perseverance and patience. The long holds and slow pace of the class can seem boring at first, but it opens into a settled, unhurried, focused practice that reminds us that there is nowhere else to be. When holding the postures for a minute, the mind tends to wander, either due to fatigue or simply because enough time has gone by. Keeping the mind focused on the task at hand, keeping it in the body and breath is the real benefit of this practice."
