I am so grateful to have made a special connection with each of these yogis and deepen the ones I already had. They are all incredible people, and getting to spend that time together in such an extraordinary place was truly a gift.

I'm grateful each person showed up with curious attitudes, open hearts, a willingness to embrace whatever the river threw at us, and for taking care of one another along the way. It is the people who make these adventures what they are, and they made this one personal and deep.

We will carry a little piece of the Tat and Alsek with us - the mountains, the glaciers, the wildness, the laughter, and maybe even a little river grit (both on and within us!) for a very long time. When we pull our travel bags out next and that fine layer of river silt is present, I know it will take us right back to all the mini moments we experienced.

Running Wild

There are men and women who come north
to where the world still feels wild,
where mountains rise from the river,
glaciers breathe and break in the distance,
and the Tatshenshini and Alsek
carve their own way through the land.

Out there, the river becomes more than water.

It is the road beneath you,
the rhythm of your days,
the sound you fall asleep to
And always there when you’re awake.

Days are measured differently
in miles of tributaries and glaciers passed,
in bears wandering the shoreline,
eagles overhead,
and wild things living exactly as they always have.

In laughter carried across the water,
and in quiet moments
when no one needs to say a thing.

Somewhere along the way,
strangers become family.

You learn the sound of each other's laughter,
who needs a hand and one who offers,
who sits quietly beside you
when the mountains are too beautiful for words.

And beneath mountains older than memory,
you remember how small you are
and somehow, at the very same time,
how deeply you are connected.

The Tat and Alsek leave their mark
glacial silt on everything,
stories you'll tell for years,
With a little river grit
both on you and within.

It moves on, and so do we.

Always forward, always changing,
the water keeps making its way toward the sea.

We were only visitors here.

The river gives nothing to keep.

But wild places have a way
of getting inside us,
changing what we notice
and what we carry forward and see.

We don't simply pass through these wild places.

We have no choice
But to let them change us.
